Military Personnel Volunteer for Covid-19 Vaccine Test

50 volunteers from the military personnel of the Russian Ministry of Defence will be testing a new Covid-19 vaccine.

MoD announced that the first group of volunteers arrived yesterday. They all underwent a comprehensive in-depth medical examination in preparation for an experiment to test the new vaccine on humans. They will remain in isolation for 14 days to prepare for the upcoming vaccination.

Earlier, MoD reported that the military department together with the National Research Centre for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after N. F. Gamalei were completing preparations for the start of clinical trials of a unique domestic vaccine against COVID-19

“We selected fifty military personnel to test the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, including five women. All volunteers underwent preliminary examination and testing for a month. During this period, they were not diagnosed with any diseases,” the ministry said.

Prior to that, this vaccine passed the stage of testing for toxicity, safety, immunogenicity and protective effectiveness. Scientisis made primary tests on large and small animals at the 48th Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Defence.

According to the Defence Ministry, it selected the volunteers from various military units throughout Russia.

On May 22, there were reports that the same promising anti-coronavirus vaccine tests went successfully. Researchers tested it by injecting themselves, they did not report any side-effects.

Furthermore, Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu said that the military would complete clinical trials of the vaccine before the end of July.

As of 4 June, Russia has 441,108 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with 5,384 deaths.
