Russia in the African Arms Market

2015 was the year of Russia's strong return to Africa, after which Moscow concluded more than 20 agreements with African countries in the military field with a total value of $50 billion. Russia controls 35% of the African arms market, thus heading the list of the biggest arms exporters to the region according to Stockholm Institute for Peace Research (SIPRI).

Last year, North African countries topped the list of the African countries with the biggest import of Russian weapons. Algeria has total deals estimated at $5 billion, followed by Egypt with $2 billion in MIG aircraft deals and Morocco with a total value of about $1 billion. In sub-Saharan Africa, deals with Nigeria, Kenya and Tanzania did not exceed $1 billion.
