50th Anniversary Of The Su-24 Maiden Flight

January 17, 1970 the first flight of the Su-24 test machine (T-6-2I) took place. The Sukhoi Su-24 is supersonic, all-weather attack aircraft with a variable-sweep wing, twin-engines and a side-by-side seating arrangement for its crew of two. Its modernized versions are still in service with the Russian Air Force. The aircraft with internal name T-6 first flew on July, 2, 1967 with Vladimir Ilyushin at the controls. The first Soviet all-weather day and night tactical attack aircraft was put into service under the designation Su-24 at 1975; at the same time, further modernization work was set up to expand its combat capabilities.

Serial production of the T-6 (Su-24) started at 1971 in the cooperation of two aviation plants: in Komsomolsk-on-Amur and in Novosibirsk.

The fuselage tail, tail surfaces and wing consoles were assembled in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, whereas the nose and middle parts of the fuselage together with the center section were assembled in Novosibirsk. The final assembly was made in Novosibirsk too.

The first production aircraft performed first flight in Novosibirsk on December 31, 1971. Deliveries to the Air Force began in 1973. Serial production of the Su-24 continued until 1983, then the aviation plants completely switched to the Su-24 new modification assembly.
