Russia has developed Oniks-M cruise missile of 800 km range

NPO Mashinostroyeniya have developed Oniks-M sea-based cruise missile with maximum firing range of 800 km and enhanced accuracy of hitting sea and ground targets. According to sources in the Russia’s military industrial complex, test flights of the missile are about to begin in the nearest months.

The source specified that the “missile is equipped with the sophisticated control system and will be able to hit both sea and ground targets more precisely”. Also the missile is better protected against impact of electronic warfare activity, the source of the agency added.

According to the source, like the Oniks that has entered service, the updated missile is able to carry nonatomic and atomic warheads. The maximum speed, mass and dimensions of Oniks-M have remained unchanged as compared to the basic version of the missile.

NPO Mashinostroyeniya who developed Oniks withheld comments on the information provided by the sources.

Earlier, NPO Mashinostroyeniya told about their plans to improve Oniks characteristics without specifying the parameters they were talking about. “Yes, we suggested improving the flight performance of Oniks missiles to enhance efficiency of this air-to-ship system”, - the company representative told TASS on September, 13th.

According to the manufacturer, the extreme firing range of export Oniks version (Yachont missile) is currently 300 km. The maximum speed of the missile is 2.5 of the sound speed at the higher altitude, weight of the nonatomic warhead is 250 kg.

Development of P-800 air-to-ship system carrying Oniks missile stared in 1982. It entered service in 2002. Surface ships and submarines are rigged with this system. For example, these missiles are carried by the leading multi-purpose submarine of Project 885 Severodvinsk.

BrahMos, the Russian-Indian missile, has been based on Oniks missile. On MAKS 2019, Kumar Mishra, the head of BrahMos Joint Venture on the Indian part, told TASS that BrahMos cruise missile might develop the firing range of up to 800 km. He emphasized then that it was possible from the technical point of view.
