This report analyses a statement that the commander of the artillery and missile forces in the Russian army, Major General Mikhail Matveyevsky, gave to the "Rossiyskaya Gazeta".

Matveyevsky said that only 50% of the development and modernization of "Iskander" has been achieved so far. At the same time, the major indicated that Russian engineers are currently working on designing a future new generation of the system.

The American newspaper recalled that the "Iskander" tactical offensive missile system entered the Russian Armed Forces in 2006, and then underwent numerous tests as a result of its participation in various armed conflicts and in Syria, where it confirmed its effectiveness.

After its development and modernization appeared a new model that had more firepower and aimed farther away. It was called "Iskander-M".

It is noteworthy that the "Iskander-M" tactical missile system is designed to destroy small-sized enemy targets located at a distance of up to 500 km. There is a possibility to re-direct the missile while in flight The missile warheads can be directed from remote radar detection aircraft or drones.

Moreover, the "Iskander-M" system was used last summer as a naval platform to hit ships in the Black Sea.

"Even if the Russian military develops a replacement, the Iskander-M could find an export market. Several countries have expressed interest in the platform including Syria, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates—but it is uncertain if the UAE still has an interest. To date only Armenia and Algeria have received the Iskander systems, in 2016 and 2017 respectively," writes the National Interest.
