Denis Manturov, head of the Organising Committee, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, stressed that "the most important thing is that MAKS-2021 will take place, this decision has been agreed upon.”

Deputy General Director of the Aviasalon Vladimir Sovetkin noted: “MAKS-2021 is the first international top-level  aviation exhibition since the start of the pandemic.”

The organisers of MAKS are determined to carry out the exhibition, says Denis Manturov at the opening of the meeting. “A pandemic is superimposed on a large stratum of organisational tasks, certain complications and, naturally, responsibilities are added.”

"Our foreign partners, despite COVID-19, have announced their plans to show the latest achievements and send their delegations to Russia. It is important to use all opportunities to convert the increased interest in the show into new contracts, exchange of technologies, and development of joint projects," Manturov said.

Vladimir Sovetkin presented the new concept the show had acquired in order to maintain relevance. The program will reflect the development of aerospace engineering and cosmonautics under new economic conditions. Among the issues to be discussed during the congress will be the stimulation of domestic demand for domestically made aircraft, development of an after-sales service system, and transition to a service model, where manufacturers offer not a product - an aeroplane or helicopter - but an integrated service which implies flight readiness, personnel training, and so on.

Despite an increasingly hostile international environment, MAKS-2021 will retain wide international participation, noted the General Director of the Aviasalon.

“We have received preliminary consents from potential participants from 40 countries. We expect that the borders with these countries will be open. At the same time, the focus will be on cooperation within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Projects being implemented jointly with the Republic of Kazakhstan will be presented, in particular concerning the localisation of production of civilian Mi-8 helicopters, organising maintenance and repair centres for helicopters, and the large assembly and repair of LMS-901 Baikal and TVRS-44 aircraft,” said Sovetkin.

The event is also to have a multifaceted business programme and will be one of the central places in which the Fourth Eurasian Aerospace Congress will take place, an event that seeks to facilitate partnerships within the Eurasian economic space.

Vneshaviakosmos, the organiser of the event,  is finalising the business programme, which will include nine conferences, several roundtables, and a reception for the congress participants and guests in addition to a plenary session. Some of the topics to be discussed include the scientific and technical groundwork in the field of commercial supersonic aircraft, aviation engines of a new generation, to discuss problems of integrating drones into common airspace, and to highlight issues of innovative development. In the space sphere questions of multi-satellite constellation development, space services, scientific exploitation of space, manned spaceflight, space biology and space debris control will also be discussed.

The event is supported by the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Roscomsmos State Space Corporation, Rostec State Corporation, the Union of Aviation Industrialists and other leading aerospace unions and associations.

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Yuri Borisov, heads of relevant departments of Russia, Kazakhstan, the leadership of the Eurasian Economic Commission, representatives of the State Duma, heads of scientific and educational organizations are invited to participate in the congress.

MAKS-2021 will also take a look into the future of technological potential: the electric and hydrogen revolutions, commercial supersonic planes, unmanned aerial vehicles, and general air-mobility will be highlighted by the innovations presented by the Russian industry and academic institutions, together with educational institutions. These include:

  • an electric propulsion system technology demonstrator based on the Sigma-4 aircraft;
  • a hybrid propulsion system demonstrator based on the Yak-40 flying laboratory;
  • the Partizan short take-off and landing aircraft project.

The Sverkhzvuk International-Level Scientific Centre will showcase its development on the supersonic Strizh civil aircraft, and the State Research Institute of Aviation Systems will demonstrate developments in the field of enhanced flight vision.

Priority attention at MAKS will be given to the topics of personnel training and the interaction of educational institutions with science and production. One of the initiatives to be presented at the exhibition by the Moscow Aviation Institute will be a programme of individual educational trajectories. Businesses will take part in forming educational programmes, focusing on the disciplines and directions, which are important for young professionals. As is tradition, a 'Student Day' will take place, when university students can visit the exhibition for free, learn about staffing programmes of leading companies and take part in job fairs.

MAKS 2021 will develop several areas that first appeared in 2017 and 2019 editions of the exhibition. For example, special expositions will be formed on the topics of general aviation and unmanned aerial systems. A separate pavilion will be occupied by the United Engine Corporation (UEC). The world's leading business aviation aircraft manufacturers intend to present their developments, which will form a business jet section. The “Made in Russia” exposition, where leading aerospace regions present products and services of their companies, in 2021 should be filled with new content, including topics of interaction between the aviation industry and civil aviation.

As usual, MAKS will delight aviation fans with a busy flight programme. Industrial companies will present their novelties both on static display and in flight. The representative of the Russian Air Force, speaking at the meeting of the Organising Committee, said that the flight program will be attended by four aerobatic groups: the Russian Knights, the Swifts, the Russian Falcons, and the Bercuts.

The Organising Committee also presented its measures to ensure flight and public safety at the event and approved the head of the Interdepartmental Control Commission for monitoring compliance with flight safety regulations. During the four months until MAKS-2021, there are many practical issues to be solved, the business programme to be polished, and the exhibition programme to be finalised. But the outline of the event is already defined, and the date of the exhibition is fixed: July 20-25, 2021.
