Update on MoD’s Response to Covid-19 in Russia

Defence Ministry Board Session was held online yesterday, chaired by the General of the Army Sergei Shoigu at the National Centre for State Defence Control. The session included a briefing on the efforts of the Russian Ministry of Defence in the battle against the novel coronavirus in the country.

He noted that for the diagnosis of the disease, 23 specialised laboratories have been deployed, these laboratories are capable of conducting up to 11,500 tests per day. 182 observation centres were formed for 30 thousand patients in order to isolate people who came into contact with patients with coronavirus infection and to monitor them. In military hospitals, 6,745 places were prepared for the possible treatment of military personnel that contracted the virus.

“16 multifunctional medical centres are under construction. Two of them have already been built in Nizhny Novgorod and Odintsovo . Six more centres will be commissioned [on April 30], and the remaining ones by May 15,” the head of the military department said.

Moreover, seven mobile units with 700 beds were prepared for deployment for the timely treatment of infectious patients. 86 medical and nursing teams were allocated to operate these mobile units.

The hospital ship Irtysh has 450 beds for uninfected patients to unload the hospitals of the Russian Ministry of Defence in the Far East to receive patients with a new coronavirus infection.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Russia has risen by 7,099 over the past day to 106,498 in all regions.
