Training like the Egyptian-British T-1 amphibious joint training, which ended days ago, cannot go unnoticed. This article explains the extent of its importance and the enormous qualitative leap it represents in the field of acquiring new concepts and experiences in the future of amphibious operations.
The reason behind the significance of this training perhaps derives from the British participation with the British amphibious landing craft "HMS Albion" of the Albion-class ships with a displacement tonnage of 19,500 tons. Their participation also included the Daring-class air-defence destroyer "HMS Dragon" with a displacement of 8,500, armed with Aster-30 long-range missiles ( 120 km) of the Daring-class destroyers. Undoubtedly, this is the strongest participation of its kind that allows an extensive implementation of amphibious landing, air defense, and surface warfare scenarios, and the implementation of counter-terrorism missions with new tactics. But this is not the main reason.
In fact, Albion and Dragon are part of a group called "LRG-X" or "Littoral Response Group-Experimentation", a task group that was deployed for three months in the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Black Sea, to test two concepts for the British Royal Navy: the Future Commando Force and the Littoral Strike Group.
These concepts are based on the restructuring of the British Royal Marines into the "Marines Commando Forces" within the "Commando Forces 2030" strategy. This strategy is based on the deployment of highly technically-equipped special forces groups supported by the technologies of aircraft, vehicles, and unmanned sailboats that will be of aid in the tasks of escort, surveillance, monitoring and detecting of targets, transport of equipment and ammunition, search and rescue, reconnaissance, intelligence, and aerial survey. This strategy also includes changing the overalls of fighters with a new type that is lighter and more air-tight (50% cotton, 50% polyester), and providing a secure network communication system and video cameras with real-time transmission technology for all the live footage and photography the soldiers are exposed to, as well as a number of other equipment and supplies that are currently under testing.
Completely new and different concepts based on the idea of the "Smart Army" where the quality is predominant over quantity, as is the case with the Israeli army that has adopted this idea in depth by relying on low-volume, highly technically-equipped units (link communications system, and immediate call capability for air and artillery support, and medical evacuation with the decentralization of orders) and highly effective firepower by ensuring the highest casualty rates (smart ammunition) with the least possible amount of munition.
Through this joint training, it is possible to create a vision for an advanced Egyptian Marine Corps that is born from the womb of the two brigades of Marine Special Units. It is also possible to apply entirely new tactics and methods in special missions, amphibious landing missions, and methods of attacking and storming coastal targets with the use of advanced technologies represented by unmanned platforms, and modern means of communication and realtime imaging.
This training was a golden opportunity for Egypt's naval forces to understand and absorb completely new methods, concepts, and technologies that are indispensable within the framework of the comprehensive development and upgrading scheme, which is being worked on in full swing to reach the level of modern armies with advanced training and technical level to ensure full readiness to face today's threats and tomorrow's threats.
