Russia to Prepare First Tunisian Astronaut

Dmitry Rogozin, General Director of the ROSCOSMOS Space State Corporation, met with Mohammed Frikha, General Director of the Tunisian company Telnet Holding in Moscow. The two parties discussed the prospects of Russian-Tunisian cooperation in the field of manned space flights, the press service of ROSCOSMOS reported on Friday.

Dmitry Rogozin and Mohammed Frikha signed a joint Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral cooperation in the field of manned space flights. The parties also discussed the prospects of Russian-Tunisian cooperation in the field of manned space flights, in particular, the intentions of the Tunisian side to prepare and launch a female astronaut into space making her the first Tunisian astronaut in history.

The meeting was attended by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tunisia to the Russian Federation Tarak bin Salem. President of the Republic of Tunisia Kais Said also took part in the meeting remotely. He praised Russian-Tunisian cooperation in the field of space and noted that Russia and Tunisia have great opportunities to implement mutually beneficial joint projects.

Tunisia launched its first satellite to space on 20 March 2021 with the help of Glavkosmos Launch Services onboard Soyuz 2 from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Tunisia’s first satellite (Challenge ONE) owned by TELNET was launched on Tunisia’s Independence Day. Challenge ONE was announced in 2019 by Tunisian aerospace and telecommunications company, TELNET after it entered an agreement with the Russian operator of commercial launches of Soyuz-2 rockets, GK Launch Services.
