In an interview with the newspaper of the Russian Defence Ministry, Krasnaya Zvezda, the  Chief of Russia’s Troops of Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defence Lieutenant-General Igor Kirillov said that TOS-2 system is one of the newest weapons of the RCBD troops.

"The TOS-2 heavy flamethrower system is one of the newest weapons of the RCBD troops. The first samples entered the troops only this year, and they are currently being tested," he noted.

The TOS-2 was used at the Kavkaz-2020 (Caucasus-2020) strategic command and staff drills; this was after the Russian Minister of Defence Sergey Shoigu ordered troops to practice firing the TOS-2 new flamethrowers.

"At the Kavkaz-2020 strategic command and staff drills, the TOS-2 system confirmed its competence. The decision to further improve this model will be made based on the results of the trial operation in the troops. At the same time, industrial enterprises are working on the modernization of the existing heavy flamethrower system TOS-1A to increase the protection of crews, increase the range and accuracy of fire, the power of ammunition, and reduce the time for preparing and performing tasks," said Lieutenant-General Kirillov.

According to Kirillov, the Russian Armed Forces will receive more than 200 units of modern equipment, and by the end of this year, Russian troops will have over 70% of modern systems in use.

"This year, in addition to the TOS-2 heavy flamethrower system, as I have already said, the troops are planned to receive more than 200 units of special equipment, including reconnaissance chemical vehicles RKhM-6, aerosol disinfection system, and TDA-3 Smoke Vehicle. With this in mind, in 2020, the share of modern designs will exceed 70%," added the  Chief of Russia’s Troops of Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defence.

The TOS-2 (the R&D work ‘Tosochka’) is a derivative of the TOS-1A ‘Solntsepyok’ heavy flamethrower system with improved performance characteristics. As compared to its predecessor, it is mounted on the wheeled chassis, with increased load capacity and cross-country ability. It has an increased launch range of unguided rockets.

Aiming, shooting and fire control of the TOS-2 are fully automated. A crane is mounted on the vehicle, so the system does not need a transport and charging machine. In addition, the TOS-2 has a system of electronic protection against high-precision weapons.

The TOS-2 ‘Tosochka’ heavy flamethrower vehicle was presented for the first time at Moscow’s Victory Day parade on Red Square on 24 June 2020.
