Baltic Shipyard has Successfully Completed Construction of the world’s First Floating Nuclear Power Unit

The engineers of JSC “Baltic Shipyard” (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) have successfully completed the construction of the world’s first floating nuclear power unit “Akademik Lomonosov” and delivered it to the customer.

According to the project manager, these technologies have an immense potential for development. First, besides floating nuclear power unit use for electrical power and heat supply in northern regions, a power supply concept for Arctic oil platforms was developed. Second, the power unit has a colossal water desalination capacity, which may be a great feature for a number of foreign clients that need considerable amounts of fresh water.

According to the plans, the floating power generating unit will be commissioned as part of a floating nuclear power plant by the end of 2019.

Power plant placement in Pevek will enable faster socioeconomic development of the Chaunsky municipal district and Chukotka in whole. Besides that, the Pevek nuclear power plant will be one of the key infrastructural elements in the framework of the Northern Sea Route development program.
