Modernised Navigation System of Il-96 Tested by Rostec

United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) of Rostec has started certification tests of the modernised navigation system for wide-body IL-96 aircraft. Testing will take place on board of the IL-96-300 flying laboratory.

The complex was modernised by the specialists of the Concern Radio-Electronic Technologies (KRET) of the Rostec State Corporation. The equipment allows the liner to follow a route with a permissible deviation of no more than 1 nautical mile and land in poor visibility conditions with a permissible deviation of no more than 0.3 nautical miles. The use of the modernised navigation system will improve flight safety and simplify the approach process for crews.

The development complies with the latest requirements for navigation equipment for wide-body airliners flying in the European Common Aviation Area(ECAA), including over non-landmark terrain - oceans, deserts, and extensive forests. Such routes are the most difficult to navigate, as pilots cannot determine the position of the aircraft visually and navigate in space using instruments.

“The creation of high-tech avionics is taking place in close cooperation of instrument-making and aviation enterprises of Rostec. By developing new and modernising existing systems, we solve the problems of import substitution and develop the production of competitive domestic avionics. The new navigation complex was created on the basis of the Russian element base, taking into account the current international requirements for navigation systems. We plan to complete its certification by the end of this year, ”said Oleg Yevtushenko, executive director of the Rostec State Corporation.

The Il-96-300 type aircraft will receive the modernised equipment; some of the elements of the flight and navigation complex will be used on the Il-96-400M.

The first version of the new IL-96-400M wide-body airliner is in the final assembly shop of the PJSC Voronezh Aircraft Manufacturing Company of the UAC Transport Aviation Division. At present, the docking of the airframe units is being completed and the installation of aircraft systems is underway.
