TCG Istanbul (F-515) Turkey’s First Indigenous Vessel

On the 23rd of January Turkey launched its indigenous frigate TCG Istanbul (F-515). The vessel will be delivered to the Turkish Naval Forces Command in 2023, said Turkey's Anadolu Agency.

The Istanbul Indigenous Frigate Launched is 113 metres long. It will be performing advanced air defense and surface warfare, submarine defense warfare, and patrol activities.

This is the first I-class vessel to be produced as part of Turkey's MILGEM  project to build indigenous warships. Turkish Naval Forces Command is expected to receive it by 2023, reported the Turkish news agency.

The ASELSAN Turkish defense corporation will equip the frigate with indigenous infrared search and tracking systems. The vessel will also feature locally-made guided missiles and anti-torpedo shields. It will also be integrated with a Turkish-made electronic assault system; auxiliary machinery systems; chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN) threat units; integrated platform control and monitoring system; detection and diagnosis systems; coveralls; valves; electrical power systems; cables; tables and panels; air compressors and fire extinguishing systems.

STM Defense Technologies Engineering and Trade Inc. is the manufacturing company of the TCG Istanbul frigate. In addition to STM, a group of domestic suppliers will are working on the project.

MILGEM project is a national warship program of the Republic of Turkey. Managed by the Turkish Navy, the project aims at developing multipurpose corvettes and frigates that can be deployed in a range of missions, including reconnaissance, surveillance, early warning, anti-submarine warfare, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air warfare, and amphibious operations.
